Die Hard: Year One Gets A New Title

Die Hard is a franchise that’s long outstayed its welcome. Sorry to start things off with such a downer, but it’s kind of hard not to feel that way on some level. While I enjoyed Live Free or Die Hard (and I refused to talk about A Good Day to Die Hard), it was clear at that point that John McClane had ventured far away from his “why me?” origins that made his character so relatable in those original films.

It’s with this in mind that we’re going into the impending prequel, Die Hard: Year One, which will feature Bruce Willis reflecting back on his earlier years in some sort of frame narrative device. But, as it turns out, it actually won’t be called Die Hard: Year One. Instead, Empire has revealed that it will actually be called McClane, as producer Lorenzo diBonaventura told the outlet:

“You can tell our intention by the fact that the title page we handed in says, ‘McCLANE.’ We want you to get invested in John McClane more than ever before.”

These are good comments for me, as the idea of McClane as a character is something that was definitely lost in the recent sequels, for the worse. Personally, I don’t know how I feel about the fact that they’re having a younger McClane go on some action-adventure deal when it seems clear that the original was his first rodeo. Regardless, one silver lining is that it sounds like older McClane will actually have a sizable role, as the producer said:

“I don’t know how you do Die Hard without Bruce. The idea that he’s not very significant in this movie is not accurate at all. We are gonna explore John McClane in his twenties. But just as prominent is the 60-year-old version.”

Do you like the new title? And do you like the reveal that Bruce Willis’ take on McClane will continue to play a key role? Let us know down below!
