Diego Luna Confirms Cassian Andor Star Wars Show Will Film This Year

Cassian Andor

I find Rogue One a strange movie, break it down and you find some serious issues with the overall pacing and the character arcs. Yet, I still enjoy the movie more than most other Disney Star Wars content I have seen so far, despite that. It does have a lot of fan service in it, for some too much, even me. I guess I liked Cassian Andor and K-2S0, not to mention I loved Krennic as the villain. Mostly, I just think the final battle is the best Star Wars battle since Return of the Jedi.

We have known for some time that a prequel to Rogue One would be coming to Disney+. The show will star Diego Luna as Cassian Andor once again, and other than that we know only that K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) will return. However, Luna recently caught up with ET, and not only confirmed a shooting start date for this year, he also talked a little about what excited him about this show.

“Yes, we are doing it. We are doing it this year,” he told ET while promoting season two of his Netflix series, Narcos: Mexico. “It’s happening, and I’m getting ready for it.” Luna said he knows “very little” about what’s in store, but has read some scripts. “I’m really excited,” he shared. “I can’t wait,” Luna said. “It is really cool to tell a story where you already know the ending. It is a different approach because of the beauty and it’s how things happen. It’s not just what happens, it’s not the typical way of approaching a story. It’s about how things happen, which in fact, is the same that happened in Rogue One. You know the ending, but you don’t know how it happened, and we have that challenge in front of us again, which is exciting.”

The problems some fans have with prequels is the simple fact that they know the fate of that story. For Cassian Andor’s character, fans can rest easy, no matter what situation they place him in. That of course, is because they already know where he meets his end. Saying that, Better Call Saul has shown us in recent years how to do a prequel series properly. In some ways, it stands up against Breaking Bad as an equal rather than an off-shoot.

Luna indicated the show may be around ten hours long when he spoke with Variety earlier this year. Though this could absolutely change before shooting, and he certainly didn’t appear confident.

“I’m not allowed to talk about it, which is great because I haven’t started, I’m just happy. I’m happy to be part of that universe. Because I grew up watching those films and having the chance to explore the role in ten hours, or as many hours as we get, it’s gonna be great.”

I hope this Rogue One prequel (we are simply calling ‘Cassian Andor’ for now) is good. How much I’m engaged will, of course, depend on the scripts, as I feel like the acting talent is good enough to sell whatever the writers are cooking here. I am also looking forward to seeing what happens with Narcos: Mexico Season 2. I felt like Season 1 was not quite on the level of the previous Narcos shows, so I am hoping things step up this time around.
