Director And Cast On The Free Guy Video Game World

Free Guy

It is Friday once again! This means that we have a new set of films out in theaters. High on everyone’s list is 20th Century Studios’ epic comedy-adventure Free Guy. This film is being praised by both critics and audiences alike. So what does happen when a person discovers that they are a background character in an open-world video game?

In Free Guy we follow Guy, played by Ryan Reynolds who is a bank teller in Free City. One day he discovers that he is a background character for a wildly popular and violent game. Here players level up by committing unprovoked acts of hostility and vandalism.

So what kind of video game world can we expect in Free Guy? LRM Online recently had the opportunity to be part of a press conference where the cast and director gave us some insight on what to expect from this video game world.

Director for Free Guy Shawn Levy talked about the steps he took in preparation to create this world. As well as the importance of balancing the film to be fun for everyone, not just gamers. “This movie was about threading the needle between wanting to represent the gaming world correctly and accurately.  For that I spoke with a lot of game publishers, coders, game designers, and played and watched a lot of games in pre-production.  So, getting that right was really important.” Said Levy.

“But it was also important to make a movie that required no gaming fluency from a viewer who wasn’t a gamer.  And just wanting to make a movie that was warm and funny and romantic and enjoyable as both.” He continued.

Joe Keery who plays Keys in the film praised the video game word that was created for Free Guy. Then goes to give an example of a detail that he enjoyed. “I actually think that we’ve done such a great job at giving a really great nod to video game culture. There are so many funny, little things. I’m not a huge gamer myself.” Said Keery.

“But there’s this great shot in the movie during this montage sequence.  You see this character in the background, and it’s played by a real-life person.  You know in those first-person shooter games where people crouch, there’s this very specific funny motion, and it means something.” He continued.

Easter Eggs?

But what about Easter Eggs? How many nods to franchises would we see in this film? Utkarsh Ambudkar aka Mouser in the Free Guy lets us in on what we can expect. “The whole third act for somebody who grew up with Star Wars, Marvel, videogames is jump out of your seat, scream with joy. It’s so much fun.  There’s so much cool stuff.  Then it’s just, I mean, I can’t give any of it away except that if I wasn’t in the movie, I would be so stoked. For all of the people out there like me, I see you, we’re being seen by this film, and it is very fun.”

This film looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun. For those of us that have played so many video games in our lives, we look forward to spotting all kinds of nods to gaming. Not to mention the performance of some of these fun actors!
