Director Denis Villeneuve Would Want To Do Another Film In The Blade Runner World

A few years back, audiences had a chance to venture back into the world of Blade Runner. The studio spent $150 million — blockbuster money, really — and didn’t pressure director Denis Villeneuve into telling a standard blockbuster story. Like the original, Blade Runner 2049 was slow, meditative, morose, and contemplative. It embraced the film noir genre and didn’t bother trying to make itself more accessible.

And at the end of the day, that movie…probably lost money. But kudos to Villeneuve and the studio going all in, creating a set of companion shorts (including an anime one) and trying to do some unique marketing. It makes me at least a bit interested in seeing what else this world can offer.

As it turns out, Villeneuve himself is interested in revisiting the world.

“It’s such an inspiring place, the Blade Runner world,” he told Empire (via IGN). “The problem I have is the word ‘sequel.’ I think cinema needs original stories. But if you ask me if I’d like to revisit this universe in a different way, I can say yes. It would need to be a project on its own. Something disconnected from both other movies. A detective noir story set in the future… I wake up sometimes in the night dreaming about it.”

So, while he’d love to revisit the world in another film, if it were to happen, it would be completely set apart from what we’ve seen…which is probably for the best.
