Disney+ Is Doing Great, But Isn’t Slowing Down Netflix Or Other Services

It didn’t surprise most people when it was reported that Disney+ has been doing incredibly well. While there may have been doubt early on, as the release of the service approached, it became clear that demand was there for the decades of content the House of Mouse had created over the course of its nearly 100-year history. But how has it been doing in recent weeks.

Sadly, Disney itself hasn’t announced any new numbers followings its 24-hour boom, but there have been third-party services that have given some insight into how it’s doing. According to app-analytics researcher Apptopia, from November 12 to 24, the Disney+ app has been downloaded 15.5 million times — 86% of which reside in the U.S. Furthermore, there have been 25.6 million sessions per day on average this past week, hinting at a highly-engaged user base.

But, is this something that will be ringing the death bell of Netflix, as many thought? Not necessarily.

While Disney has enjoyed success, the trends for services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO have been virtually unaffected, with user session trends remaining consistent over the same period.

“While early trends indicate that Netflix is weathering the impact of the Disney+ launch, we are still in the early innings of major competitive launches as new services come online in the U.S. and expand to other key markets,” Instinet analyst Mark Kelley wrote in a statement. “We think that investors will remain cautious until reported results tell the same story.”

Sadly, we are relying heavily on the companies to report their numbers, so it is impossible to verify whether or not all of this is true, though I can’t imagine it’d be good publicity to lie and get caught.

Though as great as Disney+ has been for many users, it has had its pitfalls, including the lack of a “Continue Watching” button, which was spotted to now be present in apps (via The Verge).
