Elizabeth Banks To Direct Invisible Woman For Universal

While the Dark Universe was an unmitigated disaster for Universal, they haven’t wasted any time in utilizing their properties that have served them well for decades. We have already seen them going forward with a new take on The Invisible Man, which turns the H.G. Wells story into a terrifying stalker tale. So, what else do they have in the works?

Variety is reporting that Elizabeth Banks, who is fresh off Charlie’s Angels, is set to direct and star in Invisible Woman for the studio. The property was originally a screwball comedy in 1940 that piggybacked off of The Invisible Man and The Invisible Man Returns, so its ties to the original are slight.

This particular iteration is based on an original pitch from Banks, and will not be connected with the upcoming Invisible Man movie in any way. The script for the film was written by The Girl on the Train screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson.

So, what can we expect from the film? Everything is being kept under wraps, but I do hope they go more of a comedic route, especially since the upcoming Invisible Man movie looks so serious, as that will allow it to differentiate itself.

Banks herself isn’t without controversy. In recent weeks, she’s made some controversial remarks about the performance of Charlie’s Angels and comic book movies that were taken out of context, so she’ll have an uphill battle with some fans on this, especially since this is another property that seems to piggyback off a male-dominated property.

Regardless, Banks does seem to be supportive of the industry as a whole.

“By the way, I’m happy for those characters to have box office success,” Banks told the Herald Sun when referring to movies like Captain Marvel, which are female-driven but are also still a part of a male-dominated genre. “But we need more women’s voices supported with money because that’s the power. The power is in the money.”
