Disney Legends Shine Bright at 2024 D23 Awards Ceremony

In a star-studded conclusion to the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, The Walt Disney Company honored 14 exceptional individuals with the prestigious Disney Legends Award, celebrating their lasting contributions to the company’s storied legacy. The 2024 honorees include industry giants such as Colleen Atwood, Angela Bassett, Martha Blanding, James L. Brooks, James Cameron, Jamie Lee Curtis, Miley Cyrus, Steve Ditko, Harrison Ford, Mark Henn, Frank Oz, Kelly Ripa, Joe Rohde, and John Williams.

Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, this year’s ceremony was the largest in the award’s 37-year history, with a production that rivaled Hollywood’s biggest events. In a first for the Disney Legends Awards, the ceremony will be available for streaming on Disney+ starting Monday, August 12, at 2 PM PT/5 PM ET.

Disney CEO Bob Iger kicked off the evening by highlighting the significance of the award, stating, “The Disney Legends Award is the highest honor our company bestows. It’s presented as a celebration of talent, a recognition of achievement, and, above all, a sincere expression of our deep gratitude. Disney Legends are bound by the special place they have earned in our history for their tremendous contributions in service of entertaining and delighting fans around the globe.”

Each of the honorees was celebrated with a special video tribute and surprise guest appearances, adding an emotional and nostalgic touch to the evening. Harrison Ford, for instance, was honored by Disney CEO Bob Iger, with a tribute video featuring commentary from industry legends like Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Kathleen Kennedy. Iger praised Ford, calling him “the definition of the leading man, who stands alone in a category all his own.”

Jamie Lee Curtis was presented her award by longtime friend Jodie Foster and “Freaky Friday” co-star Lindsay Lohan. Curtis was lauded for her versatility and fearless approach to her craft. A tribute video for Curtis included words from fellow Disney Legend James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Other highlights included Ryan Seacrest presenting an award to his former “Live” co-host Kelly Ripa, with Mark Consuelos also featured in Ripa’s tribute video, and a touching moment when Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president, posthumously honored comic book legend Steve Ditko, with the award accepted by Ditko’s nephew.

Musical performances added to the magic of the night, with Lainey Wilson delivering a powerful rendition of “Best of Both Worlds” in honor of Miley Cyrus and the Pacific Symphony Orchestra playing some of John Williams’ most iconic scores, with Williams’ award being presented by Harrison Ford and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

The event also featured heartfelt messages from individuals who have worked closely with the honorees. From Jane Goodall’s video tribute to Joe Rohde to Kate Winslet’s praise for James Cameron, the evening was filled with moments that highlighted the profound impact these Disney Legends have had on both the company and the world of entertainment.

The Disney Legends Awards began in 1987 and has since recognized 318 individuals, including icons such as Tim Allen, Julie Andrews, Robert Downey Jr., and Alan Menken. This year’s ceremony was the grand finale of a weekend packed with special announcements, performances, and experiences that left Disney fans from around the world spellbound.
