Disney Made A Smart Long Term Decision Regarding Its 2021 Movie Lineup

Disney’s Investor Day has come and gone with many surprising announcements.  With a slate of shows and movies lined up for the future it wasn’t hard to be excited about the future of the streaming service.  One of the biggest anticipated news though was whether Disney would follow Warner Bros. and release their 2021 lineup Direct-To-Consumer and in Theaters at the same time.  When Warner Bros. made the announcement it was met with a mixed response.

For most audience members they applauded the move allowing consumers to make the decision about safety.  The decision keeps the current lineup of movies in check without having anymore postponements. For filmmakers though this decision was not well received. Christopher Nolan and Dennis Villenueve have spoken out against the decision claiming that this will change the movie industry forever.  Villeneuve blasted Warner Bros. for being greedy and only worrying about streaming subscribers.

While most assumed that Disney would follow suit and announce that its upcoming films would be released On-Demand through Disney+ that did not come. Instead Disney shifted some of its upcoming animation projects to Disney+ like Soul and Raya but remained steadfast with its Marvel line-up along with other bigger projects releasing in theaters.

The decision to continue with theatrical releases next year was a result of one stat line. The significant growth of subscribers in the first year helped Disney’s decision. The streaming service has reached over 70 million subscribers which was its goal to reach by 2024.  With that number already achieved and growing, Disney did not need to panic going into next year. The biggest question was whether the company would pivot with its Marvel line-up starting with Black Widow and bring it straight to Disney+? That was not the case with the company announcing all Marvel films scheduled for next year will have an exclusive  theatrical release.

Also, the reaction from filmmakers regarding Warner Bros. 2021 announcement made Disney’s decision easier. While it probably not a significant reason for Disney’s upcoming films to stay with a theatrical release, it was a factor. The success of their previous films are attributed to the directors tied to them.  By keeping the theatrical releases this will keep filmmakers happy and want to continue working with Disney.

While Disney stated that they will continue to monitor the health status of the world they reserved the right to change their upcoming schedule.  The upcoming slate of movies and original content coming to the streaming service seams to be plenty for the company to continue its plan.
