Disney+ Picks Up The Goonies Reenactment Series: Why?

Nothing’s sacred anymore. If you have a movie or TV show that is close to your heart, someone’s going to step on it and smear it’s guts all over the ground. Disney+ picked up The Goonies reenactment series called Our Time, which is being redeveloped by Warner Bros. Television and it will be shot-by-shot. I also want to add that this is a terrible idea. Who the hell came up with this? Fox didn’t want to keep it, so Disney is going to take it for some reason.

So Fox Dodges A Bullet…

Fox had it, then dropped it after they felt that it wasn’t the right fit because story was “too young.” WBTV’s Exec VP and Head of Development, Clancy Collins White, shared:

Sarah worked nonstop to deliver this incredible script, we had our table read, and then the world shut down for COVID. So we came back many months later and finished the beautiful pilot, and it was an incredible cast, but unfortunately a little bit too young for Fox. And so we immediately swung into high gear and hit the town with it. We did not yet have anything in development at Disney Plus. It’s been another example of being able to carve a pathway where there wasn’t one by virtue of a great story, a great pilot, a great series. The deal has taken a while to make, but we’re really excited to be moving forward.

The synopsis when the series was with Fox

After failing to make it in New York and carrying a heavy secret with her, Stella Cooper returns to her distressed automotive hometown to substitute teach. She finds inspiration, hope and ultimately salvation when she agrees to help three students who are pursuing their filmmaking dreams by putting on an impossibly ambitious shot-for-shot remake of one of the student’s favorite movies… The Goonies. Over the course of the season, their passion will inspire a town in desperate need of hope in this love letter to the power of cinema, storytelling, and dreams.

Does Anyone In The Entertainment Industry Have Any Good Ideas?

A shot-for-shot remake? Does anyone remember the 1998 Psycho remake? That’s why this is such a bad idea. The writer and creator of Our Time is Sarah Watson. “She finds inspiration, hope, and ultimately salvation…” from her students copying… When you’re in school, you get in trouble for copying someone’s work. Producing the series will still be Amblin Entertainment and The Donner Company.
