Disney+ Rumor: Marvel Studios Shows To Get $100M Budget, Lady Sif Series In The Works

Marvel Studios really seems to be leaning HARD into their Marvel Studios brand for their upcoming Disney+ streaming service. At least that’s the scuttlebutt going around. As far as official confirmations of things, Loki is the only series that’s been officially announced. But in terms of rumors, Vision and Scarlet Witch, Rocket and Groot, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Nick Fury are all shows that have been tossed around as potentially happening.

But what exactly can we expect from these limited series, should they actually come to fruition? In the latest episode of Los Fanboys, Nick Doll and I kind of go back and forth on what we want to see. Personally, I’d love to see Marvel Studios maintain the spectacle of their franchises, and therefore I want them to go all-in in terms of their budget. Nick is much more forgiving than I, and would be more understanding of a more TV-like budget for these characters. But what would we actually be getting?

Well, according to a new report from Discussing Film, these shows will range from six to eight episodes in length and will feature budgets of $100 million. This means the budget per episode will range from $12.5 million to nearly $17 million. So how does that stack up to your average Marvel Studios film in terms of dollars per minute?

Let’s take a look at Thor: Ragnarok. It has a budget of $180 million and runs 2 hours and 10 minutes. With that in mind, it requires roughly $1.4 million per minute. If we’re to do the same with these series based on this information, assuming a 45-minute runtime per episode we get around $280,000 per minute of screentime for eight episodes, or $350,000 if there are only six episodes.

So, in short, it’s not incredibly comparable, but it’s still solid in terms of a TV budget. They’ll really have to work to bring down the scales of these stories so that the budget isn’t felt — either that or save their budget for big set pieces, kind of like what Game of Thrones does.

That’s not all Discussing Film had to say. According to them, a Lady Sif series is in early development, with Marvel Studios expecting actress Jaimie Alexander to reprise her role. It is currently unknown when this would take place, but it is worth noting that her character was the only one of Thor’s friends not to die tragically in Thor: Ragnarok or Avengers: Infinity War.
