Disney+ Still Struggling To Find Identity, Surveying Users About Potential Adult-Friendly Content

I love Disney+. I know the app is basically gathering dust on most people’s Apple TVs, but not mine. Be it for animated features, nostalgic Disney Channel original movies, or other animated shows, I find myself using it at least a few times a week. But even I, an unabashed lover of Disney content, have to admit that they have yet to get their s**t together when it comes to their Disney+ originals. Pretty much, so far, they have The Mandalorian and…no other blockbuster content.

Admittedly, they’ve been trying with shows like Diary of a Future President, but it’s not really striking a chord with me. That may be different for users with kids, but I’ve been a bit disappointed by their unwillingness to go a bit more mature with their non-action-related content. As we’ve reported previously, this identity issue at the streamer is very real and has led to the sacking of the showrunner of Lizzie McGuire.

It’s since come out that the showrunner wanted to be able to tackle more mature issues that the thirty-somethings would appreciate. Disney+ clearly didn’t agree, but the problem hasn’t just been with that show. All across the board, we’re hearing some brewing frustration over the streamer’s desire to skew young in their non-adventure-related content. But will the House of Mouse actually budge on that stuff? Maybe.

One Reddit user posted an image from a survey they supposedly received from Disney+. In it, they were asked how likely they watch shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Modern Family, How I Met Your Mother, Black-ish, and Malcolm in the Middle. Of course, these aren’t original shows and we don’t know what the result of their survey would be just yet, but this does express a willingness to a bit more mature.

Disney+ is sending surveys to select subscribers for more adult friendly shows from r/DisneyPlus

If viewers respond in droves that they would be willing to watch these more adult-oriented programs, perhaps they’d be more willing to take risks. Maybe Lizzie McGuire’s showrunner could come back and finish the series as originally intended. Rather than export all of those shows to Hulu, perhaps they can find a new way to brand Disney+ so that it could be home to more than kid-friendly content.

What do you think of this latest development? How do you feel about Disney+ expanding its demographics a bit more? Is this good news or do you think it eliminates the ability for parents to feel safe about leaving Disney+ in the hands of their kids? Let us know your thoughts down below!
