Original Arrow Finale Idea Saw Oliver Queen As The Inspiration For Batman

Like many, I didn’t know what to make of Arrow when it first came out. It took the character from the comic and gave him a Batman Begins makeover. Unlike the other DC shows at the time, it was fairly grounded in its nature. Oliver Queen wore a hood and was simply going down a list, attempting to make Starling City a better place. For better or worse, the show channeled the hell out of Batman and help make the character a lot more mainstream. As someone who’d only read his character in crossovers up until then, it even made me want to check out his standalones.

As such, it’s no surprise that the producers of the series actually had an original concept that tied into Batman. Speaking with Fake Nerd Podcast, producer Marc Guggenheim shared an interesting little factoid about one idea for ending the series.

“I kind of had a little bit of a fantasy that Oliver would die, and you’d end with some sort of news broadcast talking about his legacy and that would sort of become voice over, and then you would go to this rooftop in a whole other city and on the cuts a thug or some bad guy would come crashing through the frame, having been punched off screen. And this pair of black boots would come down right in front of him, and there’d be a flutter of a scalloped cape, and the voice over would say something along the lines of “Oliver Queen inspired a whole new generation of vigilantes.” The implication of course being that he inspired Batman.”

I love that whole concept. Why not pay off that entire concept completely? Given how much Batman Begins and Batman as a whole paid off the character, it would have been amazing to see that culminate in an in-universe Batman.

Of course, none of that could very well stick. With Arrow spawning an entire universe, we’ve since seen Batman himself play in this world in some capacity. You can’t really have him inspiring a Batman when the Batman we’ve seen is in his sixties and already a broken man. That being said, it’s still a stellar idea that I wish could have been real. Then again, I kind of wish the show’s quality didn’t fall right off a cliff either, so we can’t get everything we wish for.
