Disney To Horrify Us With Live-Action Lilo & Stitch Disney+ Film

There is a thin line between adorable and horrifying. When switching anything from animated to live-action, that line somehow gets even thinner. After all, there’s a reason why Pokémon: Detective Pikachu opted for a more cartoony aesthetic when they could have gone for terrifying and realistic. It’s also why there was so much outcry against the uncanny valley version of Sonic the Hedgehog.

So, why am I bringing all this up? Well, according to the outlet The Disinsider, Disney is ready to continue its trend of live-action adapations. This time, they will be doing so for the beloved animated film Lilo and Stitch. For the heartless and uninitiated, the story followed a girl who befriends a particularly destructive alien, and it turns into a sort of “boy and his dog” story, except with an alien. I realize now that I just described E.T., but we’ll just go with that anyway.

However, the big piece of news here is that this film, whose screenplay was written by The Crooked Man’s Mike Van Waes, will be released on Disney+ and will reportedly feature a budget of around $60 million. This is on par with what Lady and the Tramp, Disney+’s other live-action film, received for its budget.

My big question? How can they create a CG version of Stitch that isn’t absolutely horrifying to behold. I mean, Sonic the Hedgehog had nearly a $100 million budget, and that’s already looking pretty dicey as it is. Can they effectively create a version that’s cartoony — but not so cartoony that it takes us out of the story…and on a mid-budget, no less? I have my reservations, but I’m willing to be proven wrong.

If there is a silver lining, it’s that Chris Sanders, the original voice of Stitch, is supposedly expected to return.

What do you think of this? Can they possibly nail the look of a CG Stitch
