With Disney’s push for more representation for the Asian Americans and Pacific Islands (AAPI), Disney+ continues with its anticipated adaptation with the series American Born Chinese.

Disney Branded Television announced the cast comprising with Michelle Yeo (Marvel’s Shangi-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Ben Wang (MacGyver), Yeo Yann Yann (Wet Season), Chin Han (Mortal Kombat), Daniel Wu (Reminiscence), Ke Huy Quan (Finding ‘Ohana), Sydney Taylor (Just Add Magic), and former Taekwondo champion Jim Liu.

Based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, American Born Chinese tells the story of Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life. When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods. The action-packed coming-of-age adventure explores identity, culture, and family.

Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers, Central Park) serves as executive producer and showrunner.

Attendees of the Television Critics Association, including LRM Online, got a brief glimpse of a martial arts rough cut scene for a test that includes a magical staff that can be extended (popular in the Monkey King lore). The series will feature plenty of martial arts action.

Production begins in Los Angeles later this month. A release date is not set for the Disney+ series at this time.
