If the huge success of last year’s Beauty and the Beast wasn’t indication enough, Disney is in their right minds to remake virtually every animated hit of theirs under the sun. If $1.2 billion in box office revenue is a pattern to be expected, then we can’t exactly blame them for pushing forward with so many productions.
However, if there’s one animated film that was tailor-made for live-action, it has to be Mulan. With its real-world setting and relatively grounded premise and modern messages of female empowerment, it’s ripe for the making. While the film did face a delay last year (scooting it from 2018 to 2019), it looks like things are getting underway.

According to Omega Underground, the Niki Caro-directed film has locked down Bina Daigeler, Sean Andrew Faden, and Allan Poppleton to handle costume design, visual effects supervision, and and stunt coordination, respectively. What’s more is that the film is expected to hit production later this month in Wellington, New Zealand (didn’t see that location coming, did you?) and China (you probably saw that one coming).
So very soon, we’ll be getting news regarding the film’s actual production, and that will bring it one step closer to becoming a reality. The film stars Yifei Liu in the starring role.
