Doctor Sleep Final Trailer Sees Ewan McGregor Back At The Overlook Hotel

Doctor Sleep whilst already a sequel novel to The Shining from Stephen King, seems to be doing things a little differently with the movie. It looks like Doctor Sleep will act as more of a sequel to the classic Stanley Kubrick movie, with clearly matching shots aesthetic and score from that movie, as you can see in the trailer above.

What is interesting is that in the book, the Outlook Hotel was burned down at the end of The Shining novel and did not feature at all in the novel of Doctor Sleep. This definitely has me intrigued, because I honestly didn’t think this would act as a sequel to the classic Kubrick The Shining, which was quite a detachment from the source novel and famously Stephen King didn’t like it despite it becoming a cinema classic. I love the original movie and the way this looks like a proper sequel to that movie, even the haunting droning score that ran through that movie, has me excited for a film I really wasn’t interested in previously.

Doctor Sleep follows a very different story to The Shining and those elements are present here for sure. A group of nomadic psychics are feeding of children who ‘Shine’ meaning they have special powers, like Danny himself has. Danny takes it upon himself to help a very powerful girl who has attracted attention of these psychics. Where the movie will differ from the book is the fact that Danny goes back to the Overlook Hotel here, which is still standing and even has the hole in the door (thumbnail image) that Jack Nicholson smashed through to deliver that famous “Here’s Johnny” line from the original.

As a fan of The Shining movie and less of a fan of The Shining book, this pleases me greatly and it’ll be interesting to see what director Mike Flanagan can pull off with this. We won’t have too long to wait as Doctor Sleep is released on November 8.
