Rachel McAdams played Dr. Palmer in 2016’s Doctor Strange. It was a small but important part and many expected her to return for the sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. That doesn’t seem to be the case according to Variety and tweeted about by Jeff Sneider. The sequel has been going through a lot of changes including losing director Scott Derrickson, who may be replaced by Sam Raimi. There’s also a new writer on board, Loki showrunner Michael Waldron. What’s one more change?

This isn’t completely unbelievable. Palmer is Night Nurse in the comics, a character who is more like Clair Temple from the Marvel/Netflix shows like Daredevil. McAdams’ Palmer doesn’t really have much to do with the Sorcerer Supreme anymore. Doctor Strange is wholly dedicated to his mystic arts now and the story we starting to see come into shape for his sequel doesn’t leave a lot of room for medical professionals. Although, She could have played a part in a universe where Strange never gets in the accident in the sequel.
McAdams not being in the upcoming Multiverse of Madness does not mean that we’ll never see her again. Natalie Portman is set to return to the MCU in Thor: Love and Thunder. If Doctor Strange gets a third film we could always see him visiting the past, alternate realities, or simply needing a doctor and running into Dr. Palmer.
