Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness Nabs Avatar Production Designer

Why Sam Raimi Returned To Marvel For Multiverse Of Madness

It looks like director Sam Raimi has company, as Robert Stromberg joins Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Though for the moment Raimi remains unannounced, enough of the big trades have confirmed the director for Doctor Strange 2.

Now we have reports that Robert Stromberg has also joined the sequel as production designer. Stromberg is listed for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on IMDB. Whilst that’s no direct confirmation, it does seem as though the folks over at Discussing Film are convinced, check it out.

As the outlet says, Stromberg was production designer for Avatar. Whatever your thoughts on that movie, the production design wasn’t one of its issues. In fact, Stromberg won an Academy Award for Best Art Direction for Avatar and followed it up with another for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Stromberg also moved on to directing, with Disney movie Maleficent being his debut at the helm.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now scheduled for release on November 5th, 2021. That new date is due to the rolling delay Disney instigated due to the Coronavirus lockdown. Black Widow was due to release next month, and with that date cancelled has now taken the slot originally meant for Eternals this November. That means Doctor Strange 2 now takes the slot formerly held by Thor: Love and Thunder, which itself now pushes into 2022.

The delays have started a debate amongst fans as to whether Scott Derrickson will be annoyed by this overall delay. The rumored main reason that Derrickson left directorial duties on the Doctor Strange sequel, was due to feeling there wasn’t enough time to develop it properly. Now, the production just got an extra five or six months before filming even begins. However, it wasn’t meant to be for Derrickson, this time I guess. Since Raimi was first rumored, the majority of fans I have seen comment are happy Raimi is on board. However, I’m not so sure about that, I hope I’m wrong though.
