Don Bluth Hopes To Usher In ‘Renaissance Of Hand-Drawn Animation’ With New Studio

Don Bluth has an ambitious new venture.

As much as I love CG animation, like many of you, I grew up on hand-drawn animation. As a kid of the ‘90s, I grew up on the classic animated films from decades prior as well as the Disney Renaissance. From there, I also fell in love with animation from overseas, including a ton of anime. So, I lamented the trend toward pure CG animation. As amazing-looking as it is, I have been waiting to see a return to hand-drawn animation in the States.

Yes, we have seen a good number of 2D-animated series on streaming services, but I’m not sure how many are hand-drawn. Well, it looks like one icon in the industry is ready to change things. The legendary Don Bluth has launched a brand-new studio, Don Bluth Studio. Its goal is to bring in a world of hand-drawn animation.

“We believe the public is craving another renaissance of hand-drawn animation,” their Facebook page posted (via Cartoon Brew). “Our goal is to make that dream become a reality.”

But, from the sound of it, their studio will be very open about their process. As was stated: “Our company will be VERY transparent, showcasing and updating the public with concept art, pencil tests, model sheets, animatics, and much much more. We are excited to show everyone what we have been working on. Please join us in our new adventure!”

Lavelle Lee has been appointed as vice president.

As you may already know, Netflix is currently working on an adaptation of the video game Dragon’s Lair. But one of their other big projects on the horizon is Bluth Fables, which will be nursery rhyme-type stories. Bluth himself will narrate the stories, and they will take place within the pages of a book.
