Ryan Reynolds Could Star In A Live-Action Dragon’s Lair Movie

Ryan Reynolds? Dragon’s Lair? Sign me up!

I think Ryan Reynolds has a goal. A Goal to be the best like no one ever was. To be somehow lock down every video game-type movie ever. Of course, he starred in the high-profile Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and is set to come out in the video game-inspired Free Guy. Now, it’s as is he hasn’t really had his fill of these types of adaptations and is going for the hat trick. Though, instead of going for something that skews more modern, he’s going for an arcade classic.

THR is reporting that the actor  is in talks to join a live-action interpretation of Dragon’s Lair. That’s right. That one arcade game that featured amazing animation by the great Don Bluth is getting a live-action take. Not only is Reynolds in talks to star in, but he could be hopping on to produce it as well.

The feature will be coming from Netflix (who closed the deal after a year of negotiations). I know what you’re thinking…will Don Bluth be involved? The answer is yes, but it’s unclear just how involved he will be. As of this writing, he’s only being coined as a producer, so that honestly can mean anything.

The game Dragon’s Lair is fairly simple. It features a knight named Dirk who has to rescue Princess Daphne from an evil dragon. So, you know, pretty textbook fantasy stuff. Honestly, the big appeal here was the animation back in 1983, and the very idea of somewhat controlling an animated character. Sure, the actual gameplay didn’t rise above memorization, but still…pretty cool.

As a side note, I can’t help but wonder if Netflix will take advantage of the game’s history to turn this into a Black Mirror: Bandersnatch-type project. What I mean is they should turn this big bastard into a choose-your-own adventure-type deal. They’ve experimented with stuff like that in the past and I can’t think of any better way to replicate the original experience (Though I guess controlling an animation would be cool).
