Don Cheadle Discusses Whether or Not We’ll See War Machine Again in the MCU

Don Cheadle is, generally speaking, a very busy individual. He’s in the upcoming Space Jam 2 with LeBron James, he’ll be appearing in Ratched for Netflix and he’s currently starring in and producing the second season of Black Monday, which starts up in March on Showtime. It was during his promotion of Black Monday at the recent Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, California, that Cheadle was asked whether or not he would be returning to the MCU as COL James Rhodes, alias War Machine.

“If there were to be one, I’d really want to dig into him and maybe even find something that felt closer to the first Iron Man for who he was.” The Oscar nominee said, “I think they can go anywhere with him now.”

It was certainly an interesting reference for him to make, given that he famously replaced Terrence Howard as War Machine following the first Iron Man. For a time, there was talk of a solo film, but in an older interview with Entertainment Weekly while promoting Avengers: Endgame, Cheadle confirmed that it was no longer a thing.

“No. We kicked it around a bit.  There was definitely going to be a lot of tension between his job as a military man and his allegiances to the code that he swore an oath to uphold, versus the changing world. I think they probably would have run afoul of each other a little bit, but I don’t know if he would have been a straight fugitive, or if he would have become decommissioned. But there was definitely going to be some tension between those two worlds.”

There are several high profile Marvel shows in the works for Disney + to include WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter SoldierLoki, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk, but when asked about the possibility of starring in a Disney + series, the actor admitted that wasn’t really on his radar.

“I really don’t know… I haven’t given it much thought as far as which would be or if either would even be. That was an 11 year journey.”

I wouldn’t discount the possibility, but the fact that this is being reported as a question he fielded, rather than a rumor from within Marvel kind of tells you all you need to know about what’s happening with this character.

I’ll admit to being personally disappointed that nothing is cooking for Cheadle within the MCU, particularly given his talent. There’s a lot for Marvel to work with when it comes to James Rhodes. He’s a hero and a disabled veteran who’s just lost his best friend. There was discussion in Spider-Man: Far From Home about everyone looking for the next Iron Man. It could literally be Rhodes. Would he want that burden or mantle? Now that the dust has settled, what is his worldview and what does he think of the sacrifices he and his friends have made…will he go to Wakanda to get his legs fixed? While the comics provide answers to some of this, I’d prefer to see it on the big or small screen with Cheadle in the lead.

What about you? Do you want to see solo War Machine film or series?
