Don Cheadle has been playing James Rhodes aka War Machine since he replaced Terence Howard in the role first in Iron Man 2. For an MCU character that has been there since day one and as an actor that first appeared in Phase 1 of the MCU it does seem a little bit of a shame to me that War Machine has never been given his own movie.
Well, it turns out that at one point a War Machine movie was actually on the cards, Don Cheadle recently spoke with EW and gave a few details about the movie which was to be written by Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole. Cheadle says the movie would have explored.
“A lot of tension between his job as a military man and his allegiances to the code that he swore an oath to uphold, versus the changing world. I think they probably would have run afoul of each other a little bit, but I don’t know if he would have been a straight fugitive, or if he would have become decommissioned. But there was definitely going to be some tension between those two worlds.”
I don’t know about you guys, but I would have really liked to see that? I do think it’s too late for a War Machine movie set around that idea to happen now, though Marvel could certainly still do a War Machine movie with a slightly different concept instead. I think the character has grown since the ideas for that movie were devised and now he feels like a fully-fledged member of the Avengers and probably not even in the Military any longer. But we could still get a cool, War Machine movie, right?
