Earlier this year saw the animated Deadpool project from Donald Glover shut down. After months of the project seemingly gaining some traction, FX pulled the plug on it seemingly out of the blue. At the time, the cited reason was the typical “creative differences,” and given that Donald Glover went on to release a full episode of a script online (though, I’m pretty sure that script was written in a frenzy on the fly the night before, and wasn’t actually an episode of the show), it seemed to give credence to the idea that the network didn’t want to go forward with his ideas.

But it doesn’t sound like that’s the whole story. FX CEO John Landgraf recently fielded questions at the TV Critics Association summer press tour, and while there, he was asked whether or not they could ever revive the show with Glover. His answer was a bit surprising:
“No. I think that Marvel will revive it, because they have the rights. They own the IP and they have the rights to do an animated adult series based on any of the X-Men characters, and based on Deadpool specifically. They didn’t want to do the show that Donald and Stephen [Glover] wrote. We would have done show that Donald and Stephen wrote, but it wasn’t our decision. When Marvel decided not to do that show, we parted company with them as did Donald and Stephen. Now it’s totally up to them [Marvel] whether they hire someone else to do a different show.”
I wasn’t expecting that answer. Landgraf totally threw Disney under the bus with that one. Now it’s interesting to look back at that original statement from the network, which read:
“Due to creative differences, FX, Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and Marvel Television have agreed to part ways on Marvel’s Deadpool animated series. FX will no longer be involved with the project.”
I’d always read that as FX getting cold feet and pulling out, but from the sound of it, Marvel Television is the real culprit here, for better or worse. What do you think of this news and Landgraf’s comments? Let us know your thoughts down below!
