It appears as if the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow will continue as a new film is reportedly in the works with one of the directors of the previous film, Joachim Rønning, returning to direct the franchise’s sixth installment.  Series veterans Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio are said to be penning the script along with Jeff Nathanson. But don’t expect it in the next year or two, as Rønning is busy on Maleficent 2 and likely won’t be available to work on this for some time. The outlet The GWW speculates 2021 and 2022 is a possibility.

But what about its star, Johnny Depp? While Johnny Depp doesn’t have any crazy tweets, none that have surfaced anyway, he does have abuse allegations and a report of punching a crew member on the set of a recent film. This leaves the potential for the House of Mouse to part ways with the actor, if they choose to do so.

This would mean continuing the franchise without the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow.  Could the franchise survive without him? Possibly, but it would be a huge gamble for Disney.

Producer on the film series Jerry Bruckheimer told DigitalSpy last year that he can’t see the franchise continuing without Depp.

“I just don’t see it. The secret to any successful franchise is picking talented people, and Johnny is absolutely key to the success of Pirates. He’s such a unique character, such an endearing character, and such an irreverent character all in one.”

I would say just end the franchise if Depp can no longer be involved. However, if Disney does decide to move on without Captain Jack, I do have a suggestion, Russell Brand. He already seems to display some of the mannerisms of Depp’s Sparrow, he’s a quirky guy and could continue the Sparrow legacy as some sort of long lost relative.

My guess is if there is another Pirates of the Caribbean film in the works, Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow is going to be front and center.

Another Pirates film? What say ye? Let us know in the comments down below!
