Nintendo’s Upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct Is A Mistake

There’s a new Nintendo Direct on the way, folks. In fact, this Wednesday on August 8 at 7am PT, it will begin streaming on Nintendo’s official channel, which is great news for fans…right? Well, maybe, depending on how much you’re looking forward to this year’s big tentpole game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

That’s right. We will be getting an entire Direct dedicated to the blockbuster fighting game, and I have to ask the question…”Do we really need it?”

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love me some Super Smash Bros., but during their E3 Direct, they already spent roughly half of their time on this game, and given how empty their slate looks in the latter half of the year, they can really use a pick-me-up of a FULL Direct to tout brand-new titles hitting int he latter half of the year.

While Nintendo Switch, has been doing pretty well for itself over the past year-and-a-half since its release on store shelves. 2017 saw the release of TWO amazing tentpole games in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, and while this year has seen its fair share of solid games, there have been pretty much no system sellers in all of 2018.

Simply put, 2018 has been pretty dry, and while I’ve loved some games this year like Octopath Traveler, even I have to admit, the pickings have been pretty slim this year.

I was okay with their muted E3 presentation, where a lot of the focus was put on Smash…but do we really need that for two Directs in a row? I worry this proves that, apart from Smash and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Nintendo has nothing up their sleeves for the rest of 2018…and that’s pretty darn disappointing.

Now, I’m not one to doubt the almighty Big N, and if they do, in fact, have a steady stream of solid games hitting the system in the latter half, then they should be using this time to push those, not Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

But what do you think about this? Do you agree with me, or are you so hungry for Super Smash Bros. that you’re willing to soak in every second given? Let us know down below!
