Fans have been looking forward to the upcoming DuckTales for months now. As a series that shaped many a childhood in the early ‘90s, it was always bound to face a little bit of pressure. Plus, given the aesthetic makeover it was getting, there was no telling how receptive older audiences would be, or if it would be unique enough to appeal to its main target demographic (kids). But they seemed to be making all the right steps. They’ve put the focus on high adventure, the relationships between Scrooge and the kids, and all that comes with it.
Additionally, Disney XD made sure to lock down a good cast that consisted of David Tennant, Ben Schwartz, Bobby Moynihan, and Kate Micucci. This latest casting news comes as a bit of a surprise. Fans of the original will remember the character Fenton Crackshell, an accountant who moonlit as the superhero Gizmoduck. In the new series, however, this character will be given a Latino makeover. Fenton’s full name is now Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera, and will be portrayed by Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Speaking with TheWrap, DuckTales co-producer and story editor Fancisco Angones stated:
“Growing up as a Cuban-American comics enthusiast, I was always hungry for a Latino hero to call my own. In developing the new series, Matt and I leapt at the opportunity to adapt DuckTales’ marquee hero into a young scientist character with Latin-inspired roots. His rapid-fire earnestness paired with his wide-eyed yet determined optimism made him the perfect person to yell ‘BLATHERING BLATHERSKITE!’â€
Apparently, Miranda came to mind immediately, which puts absolutely no pressure on the talent at all. As a DuckTales fan who especially loved the look of Gizmoduck as a kid, this is right up my alley in terms of great news. Can’t wait to see how he’s incorporated into the story, and how his portrayal will be different from the original.
