According to the latest Marvel Barside Buzz, Dwayne Johnson is being courted for the role of Apocalypse, presumably for the X-Men reboot movie. The information comes from MTTSH on her sub service. She has a good it rate, yet I do find this one kinda hard to get behind.
Johnson hasn’t played a villain for a while as he isn’t keen on being beaten in the movies (reportedly). However, it’s also rumored the reason Johnson is currently back in WWE is because his Hollywood star has fallen. It used to be that putting Johnson’s name on a movie brought in box office. However a bout of box office underperformance with Johnson’s recent movies has changed all that.
Perhaps Marvel are looking at this as an opportunity that may not come around again for some time, if ever? Though, I doubt Johnson will come cheap. I’m also not convinced he’s the right person to play Apocalypse, nor that the villain is the right antagonist for the X-Men reboot. It certainly would not be hard to realize a better adaptation of Apocalypse that we got in the FoX-Men movie of the same name. Personally, I’d have preferred building up Apocalypse as a threat like Thanos was for the Avengers. There are few bad guys as big a bad as Apocalypse in the X-Men universe.

Perhaps that’s not Marvel’s thought process though? Maybe they are considering who’s a great X-Men villain that hasn’t been used, or wasn’t adapted well previously? I think Mister Sinister would have been great first villain for the MCU X-Men, and he hasn’t been seen in live action. Sinister is however one of the current villains in the X-Men 97′ animated series.
We’ll see if this one pans out or not. As said, if this came out a year ago I’d have believed it less. However, Johnson needs to stay relevant at 50 years. Being the big bad of a rebooted X-Men film might do the trick? Personally, if I was doing Apocalypse, then it would be a mo-cap role for me. However, let’s see where this rumor goes in a year or so. For now, big pinch of salt as usual.
