EA And Surgent Studios Unveil Tales Of Kenzera: ZAU

Electronic Arts and Surgent Studios have unveiled a touching single-player action-adventure platformer titled Tales of Kenzera™: ZAU. This innovative game promises to deliver a unique perspective on the journey of finding hope and courage in the face of loss. Inspired by the personal experiences of Surgent Studios founder and BAFTA-nominated actor Abubakar Salim, Tales of Kenzera: ZAU pays homage to his late father and their shared passion for video games.

Abubakar Salim, reflecting on his personal struggle with grief, expressed,

“For a long time, I’ve struggled to find a way of communicating my journey with grief. To now be able to do that through Zau’s story of loss, growth and healing in Tales of Kenzera: ZAU feels so right. Games, to me, are the most powerful medium to share stories. My late father introduced me to the medium, and what better way of honoring him, our relationship and love than through this experience? I am extremely grateful and proud of the team of creatives that have helped craft Surgent Studios, and I’m beyond thrilled to have EA Originals give me the platform and space to share this story together with them.”

Under the EA Originals label and developed by Surgent Studios, Tales of Kenzera: ZAU invites players into the emotional journey of Zau, a grieving hero on a quest to bring his father back from the clutches of death. Guided by Kalunga, the God of Death, Zau navigates mystical 2.5D realms to harness the cosmic powers of the warrior shaman. The game encourages players to embark on a spiritual healing journey, revealing their true potential in the face of adversity. Scheduled for release on April 23, 2024, Tales of Kenzera: ZAU will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and the EA app.

Jeff Gamon, General Manager of EA Partners, spoke about the EA Originals mission, stating,

“The EA Originals founding principle is to provide means and support to emerging game development talent, enabling creatives to bring their bold and visionary storytelling to a global gaming audience. Our enthusiasm for Abu’s touching vision that draws from his family history and a millennium of Bantu mythology drove our support and belief in Surgent Studios from their start several years ago. The EA Originals team takes great pride in supporting Abu in sharing a truly unforgettable and poignant experience with the world.”

Set in the captivating yet perilous lands of Kenzera, the game draws inspiration from Bantu tales, weaving a narrative rich in chaos and order, ancient shamans, sacred spirits, and captivating creatures. Players can wield cosmic powers from Sun and Moon masks, engaging in rhythmic combat against restless spirits. Meticulously hand-crafted animations allow players to manipulate time and crystallize enemies using the Moon mask powers or launch fiery spears with the Sun Mask. The immersive experience is heightened by the enchanting original score by multi-award-winning composer Nainita Desai.

Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is set to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Pre-orders are currently available, offering two shaman points unlocking up to two in-game skills, Kalunga’s Blessing visual effect variant, and the digital companion comic, Soulshifters, delving deeper into the rich lore of Kenzera.
