Sean Gunn Will Play Maxwell Lord In DCU – But He’s Not A Villain

Sean Gunn will play Maxwell Lord in the DCU it was reported this weekend, but he’s not a villain according to big bro James Gunn. The news was first reported by Deadline and it has been said that currently they have no idea where Lord will show up. As in, they don’t know of any specific movie or show that he’s a part of.

Here is what the trade had to say about the possibilities for Lord.

“It’s not clear if Sean Gunn’s Maxwell Lord will make a cameo in brother Gunn’s Superman: Legacy which will go into production next year. The character, as I hear it, will be referenced in the background of Legacy but will appear in future DC projects. A similar motif will occur for other characters in the new DC Universe, the first phase which is named Gods and Monsters: Chapter One. Stay tuned.”

The trade also referred to Lord as a villain, which makes sense given his last appearance in WW84. However, James Gunn was quick to correct the headline. Here is what Gunn had to say on Instagram.

“Calling Maxwell Lord a villain seems reductionist. As he was originally portrayed in JLI made him one of my favorite characters.”

Lord may have been a character that was no white knight, but he certainly wasn’t a villain.

In addition Gunn says that most of the announced projects for Phase 1 of the DCU have writers/directors attached.

Of course we don’t know who they all are, and at the moment Gunn isn’t saying. I’m sure we’ll find out before any official announcements. There are a few names we already know of. Andy Muschietti was tapped to direct Batman: The Brave and the Bold and James Mangold is developing Swamp Thing.

What do you think then as Sean Gunn will play Maxwell Lord in the DCU, but not as a villain? Thoughts below as usual.
