El Chicano Trailer: Check Out The First Latino Superhero Flick!

Early Tuesday morning, the official trailer for the upcoming film El Chicano dropped. Penned by stuntman-turned-writer/director Ben Hernandez Bray and Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team, Smokin’ Aces), the project made the film festival tours in 2018, including a premiere at the Los Angeles Theatre Center. The film was eventually picked up for distribution by Briarcliff Entertainment for 2019.

Billed by some entertainment news sources as the “first Latino Superhero pic,” El Chicano tells the story of two twin brothers, Diego and Pedro, growing up in East L.A. As they grow up, Diego becomes a police officer while Pedro turns to crime. When Pedro’s death ends up having connections to Diego’s case dealing with the cartel, the mysterious vigilante from their youth known as “El Chicano” returns with a mission of bloody justice.

The film promotes nearly an entire Latino cast. The talented crew of thespians includes leads Raúl Castillo and George Lopez, as well as a supporting cast of recognizable talents like Emilio Rivera (Mayans, Sons Of Anarchy), Marco Rodríguez (A Man Apart, The Crow), José Pablo Cantillo (Elysium, Crank), Marlene Forte (Fear The Walking Dead), Aimee Garcia (Robocop, Dexter), and Kate Del Castillo (The 33, The Book Of Life). For director Bray, after a number of television credits including Supergirl, Arrow, Queen Of The South and Lucifer, this will be his debut at the helm of a major motion picture.

Carnahan and actor/writer Adam G. Simon have been promoting El Chicano on Twitter for months, pointing out how the film was passed on by many studios due to its Latino lead and heavy focus on a Latino cast. After the successes of Jordan Peele’s Get Out and Us, as well as Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, a film like El Chicano continues to tilt the balance toward more diverse and inclusive projects with people of color as the main focus. While the previously mentioned films cover horror and drama, this Bray/Carnahan creation appears to be an action-packed vigilante adventure with an immigrant undertone at a time when the topic of immigration is in the spotlight.

El Chicano hits theaters May 3rd.
