Every DC Movie In The Works

Welcome to a comprehensive list of the DC Extended Universe, no wait, World’s of DC, no… uh… Let’s just call this list Every DC Movie In The Works. We will be looking at everything being made from this years Aquman to the announced but not yet officially official films like Blue Beetle and Harley and Joker. I will mention that there are still holding dates from Warner Bros sprinkled over the next few years, but I will not talk about them without a movie attached.

Let’s get started with a simple listing before we dive head first into the deep end. I may or may not be using aquatic puns…

Keep in mind that there are plenty of films that are farther along in development than others, with some (like Birds of Prey) careening to a production start date, and others New Gods with almost little to no information behind them.

Aquaman (21 December 2018)
Shazam! (5 April 2019)

That is a lot of movies. WB is very busy trying to do as much as possible, and why not? Comic book movies are hot right now, and despite a plethora of articles every year stating the opposite, there appears to be no fatigue for the genre in general. Only a lack of willingness to put up with sub-par movies. I understand that many of those films listed have been in and out of the rumor mill. I included everything I could see that has had any forward movement on production.

Let’s get to it!

DATED

Aquaman

This movie has been in the works for some time. We first saw Jason Momoa’s titular hero in a “surveillance” clip in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. After that, he had a full role in the Justice League movie. JL may have been a very divisive movie, but that hasn’t stopped people from being excited about Aquaman! The trailer for this debuted at the San Diego Comic-Con and looks very different than other entries to the DCEU. Aquaman is directed by James Wan and stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

Shazam!

This movie is completely different than anything else WB has done with their DC properties. This is the story of an aging wizard granting his abilities to a young kid, who upon saying “Shazam” is transformed into the world’s mightiest mortal. The funny part of all of this is the fact that young Billy Batson, the recipient of these powers, keeps his kid mind in his adult superhero form. This movie’s trailer shows a light-hearted action flick that looks like 1988’s Big but with superpowers. The trailer does show connections to the existing DCEU which is great! Shazam! Is directed by David F. Sandberg and stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Mark Strong, and Djimon Hounsou.

Joker

The Joker is one of the most iconic villains ever created. He has most famously been portrayed by Cesar Romero in the 1960’s, Jack Nicholson in the 1989 Batman film from Tim Burton, and Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight from Christopher Nolan. Jared Leto played the character in Suicide Squad but his role was a reduced one, despite what the trailers tried to tell us. Now we have Joaquin Phoenix set to play the Clown Prince of Crime in a Joker origin film.

Details are few and far between, but we know it will be set in 1980s Gotham and looks to create an original version of the Joker character. Reports from That Hashtag Show state that Phoenix will start out as Arthur Fleck before becoming the madman we all know and love. The same source theorizes that Joker may be the bastard son of Thomas Wayne. Joker will be directed by Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, and Zazie Beetz.

Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman was a colossal success for WB and DC. It made the most money in the DCEU and showed the world that female superheroes can stand on their own. This sequel is set in the past… the 80s… 1984 to be exact! It will once again team Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins together and see the return of Steve Trevor played by Chris Pine. How his character actually returns is unknown. The movie will see the Amazon Princess face off against Cheetah with the Cold War as a backdrop. Despite some early footage being shown at the SDCC there isn’t much more known at this point. Wonder Woman 1984 will be directed by Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, and Kristen Wiig

Birds of Prey

After the hugely popular Harley Quinn made her movie debut in Suicide Squad WB decided to attach her to a whole bunch of movies (Suicide Squad 2, Harley and Joker, Harley Quinn, Gotham City Sirens) and make money off the hype. Fast forward to today and we still have those movies on the list, but there’s been absolutely no movement on most of them. There have been rumors that Gotham City Sirens may have become Birds of Prey, but that isn’t official (so there may technically be a whole extra movie to add to this list). It would make sense though based on early descriptions of the former. We do know that Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, Renee Montoya, and Harley Quinn will be the “heroes” facing off against Black Mask. Filming is set to hit production in January of 2019 and will hit theaters on February 7, 2020. Birds of Prey will be directed by Cathy Yan and star at least Margot Robbie.

In Development

The Batman

I am not going to lie, I will believe it when I see it. This movie has been in pre-production hell and is constantly in the rumor mill. Ben Affleck was originally slated to direct and star in the movie based on a script he wrote with DC’s own Geoff Johns but stepped down during discussions with WB about the best course forward. Matt Reeves was tasked to take over the directors chair and write a new script, but there’s no concrete information. There are constantly rumors that Affleck wants out as Batman, but just as many saying he doesn’t. The Batman will be directed by Matt Reeves and star Ben Affleck… maybe.

The Flash (Flashpoint?)

Well, there’s a lot of nothing to report on this movie. Sure there have been 100 scripts and 200 directors attached, but where is the movie at right now? We know that Ezra Miller will reprise his role as the Scarlet Speedster and that the story may contain elements of the Flashpoint storyline from the comics (though it sounds like DC could be distancing themselves from that storyline).

There are two directors attached that have held on for quite some time, and they were co-screenwriters on Spider-Man: Homecoming and co-directors on the comedy film Game Night. This film was originally supposed to film LAST year, and there are rumors that it will start production this coming February and finish in the month of May. The Flash movie will be directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein and will star Ezra Miller

Black Adam

This movie seems out of place to me. We know that this famous Shazam villain will not be in the Shazam! movie. We also know that Dwayne Johnson has been attached to star as the title character for a long time. Johnson has also expressed that the villain may find himself in an anti-hero role in his own movie. There are no directors attached but Adam Sztykiel was hired to write. It will star Dwayne Johnson. Also, somewhat unrelated, Black Adam could show up in a DC film prior to his own standalone.

Nightwing

Nightwing is the grown-up version of the original Robin, Dick Grayson. He has a movie in the works, but not much is known. The LEGO Batman Movie director, Chris McKay has signed on to direct and has talked about his love of the character a lot on Twitter. That’s about it. Seriously.

Green Lantern Corps

We got our first taste of the intergalactic police force in 2017s Justice League. It wasn’t much though, just a clip of a Lantern dying in the battle against Darkseid’s forces and the ring flying off. After the overwhelmingly disliked movie that starred Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, DC has wanted to get a second attempt at this franchise. David S. Goyer was hired to do a script but was replaced this year by DC’s own Geoff Johns. There is no director or cast set.

Suicide Squad 2

The first movie attempted to utilize the Guardians of the Galaxy approach, well at least in my mind it did. I think I remember the extensive reshoots were designed to take it from dark and gritty to dark and funny. It made money though and that warranted a sequel. David Ayer will not return to the director’s chair but Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant) will take his place. Margot Robbie is expected to return, but only after Birds of Prey. It’s safe to assume many of the original squad will return as well.

Screenwriter Todd Stashwick, as of mid-September, stated that the script has been finished and that he’s proud of it.

New Gods

This year WB announced that Ava DuVarnay (A Wrinkle in Time) will direct a movie based on the Jack Kirby comic. Darkseid is a major part of this story and it may end up being the first time we see him on the big screen. There is no more information at this time.

Cyborg

We’re getting deep into the list now. This movie was originally supposed to releasing next year, but there has been no movement on it, aside from some comments from actor Joe Morton on the subject (and actors generally aren’t the best sources of info for movie stuff). There were shots of the hero in BvS and he starred in Justice League, but WB has pumped the brakes on this. If it does happen, it will likely keep its star Ray Fisher, who has expressed on social media that he has no intention of leaving the character any time soon..

Batgirl

This movie was rushed to announcement with Joss Whedon attached to direct. He left earlier this year stating he didn’t have a story. I think it had something to do with his inability to save the Justice League movie in their eyes, but that’s pure speculation. The movie recently got Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) to pen a script, who also did work on Birds of Prey. This is a bit promising, as there seems to be a lot of enthusiasm surrounding her work. Perhaps, given that the momentum keeps, Batgirl will be one of the first films to hit production in 2020, but we’ll have to wait and see.

t

And the rest…

In addition to those other projects, there are a nearly-unlimited other of other projects with almost no information around them. Some seemed to gain momentum, only to lose filmmakers and seemingly disappear, with none of us knowing their real status, and some may still likely hit…eventually.

We know thatBlackhawk, Blue Beetle, Deathstroke, Harley Quinn/Joker, Lobo, Justice League Dark, Man of Steel 2, Justice League 2, and Supergirl are all in the works in some degree or another. We all know the turmoil of Justice League Dark (Dark Universe) and its director’s chair, Lobo has had rumors of Michael Bay as a director, and Supergirl has a screenwriter attached. Plus where is the long-awaited Man of Steel 2???

There’s no denying that WB and DC have had a rough time with their movies since the Dark Knight Trilogy. Each one, except Wonder Woman, has had its detractors with critics and fans alike. However, the recent Aquaman and Shazam! trailers look really fun and different compared to BvS and Justice League. I hope for all of us comic book movie fans that they live up to the hype. What are you most excited about on this list? Tell us in the comments below.
