Ewan McGregor Positive About More Obi-Wan Kenobi Stories

Why did Liam Neeson come back as Qui-Gon for Obi-Wan Kenobi? The veteran actor talks about why he came back to Star Wars.

Ewan McGregor remains positive about more Obi-Wan Kenobi stories. As we know, Obi-Wan Kenobi was only planned as one story. However the positive reaction to the character indicates there’s money to be made here. Disney likes money, therefore I have absolutely no doubt at all that we will get another Obi-Wan Kenobi led Disney+ show. Whether that’s a Season 2, or an alternatively titled sequel who knows? What seems very clear is that there is no current idea, just a desire from those involved to make it happen.

Talking during a recent Comic Con in Texas, McGregor was quite optimistic about future plans for more Obi-Wan Kenobi.

“I’m totally up for it guys, I wanna do it,” he told the audience.

Asked if there were any solid plans in place, McGregor denied it.

“I’m absolutely honest, there is no plan to make one yet.”

However he does say the thinks it’s only a matter of time.

“But I think, I’m pretty sure they’re just biding their time. But nobody’s approached me as of yet.”

I can find no reason to disagree, either financially or creatively. I have however spoken of a few caveats I have to that. Namely, for me, they cannot have Vader again. Well, unless Vader’s story somehow connects without the pair being aware of one another. Obi-Wan Kenobi pushed the boundaries of the canon both with the Vader clash, and Leia’s familiarity with Kenobi. We asked on The Cantina, was it worth it? I’m in two minds there. On one hand I think it was now a good idea. However, some of the execution was poor, preventing this show from being a classic.

My idea for a sequel would be a story? Yeah, you probably don’t care, but I’m going for it anyway. I’d have a story that connects Vader and Kenobi indirectly. Something like a criminal organisation, maybe Crimson Dawn and Qi’ra as the third party and antagonist of both. Vader is already after Crimson Dawn in the comics and you could have them doing something like smuggling Force sensitive children. Vader would want to capture them for the Empire, or kill them, and Kenobi might decide to rescue them. If that was all mixed in with Kenobi receiving his training from Qui-Gon then I think it could be a neat angle. As long as Vader and Kenobi don’t meet. You could for example have Kenobi spare villains after defeating them only for Vader to show up and show his darker side after Kenobi has left.

Just no more duels between Vader and Obi-Wan or things will start to feel silly. Equally I’d take a Kenobi Season 2 that had no Vader at all, other than Obi-Wan dealing with his own emotions about Vader. Oh, and no more Leia, please. I liked Leia in the show, but again, any more is pushing it.

So Ewan McGregor remains positive about more Obi-Wan Kenobi stories. Where do you stand? Whether you want it or not, I think it’ll happen, so what could they do that excites you? Thoughts below as always.
