The Great Season 2 is coming soon! Entertainment Weekly received exclusive photos of season 2 and an interview with The Great creator, Tony McNamara. He gave some interesting bits of information and I can’t wait to binge the second season in November.

During the interview with Entertainment Weekly, McNamara said:
For Catherine, it was like that was the job, taking power, and she didn’t really focus on how she might use power or how hard it would be to exercise power, or what sort of country she’d be taking over. So it’s really the next part of the journey of once you get power, what do you do with it?
McNamara shares that Catherine’s rise to power will bring the court into chaos:
I think that the court shifts and all the characters have to kind of change their game in the second season, to kind of work their way to some kind of position of having some power.
People without a lot, who were always struggling because they didn’t have power, like Orlo, suddenly have a lot of power or he perceives that he should have a lot of power, but he’s faced with limitations around how much he can exercise power.
He continues with where Marial and Elizabeth will be at in season 2:
And then I think for people like Marial, obviously she was a maid and it completely changes her situation. And then for Elizabeth [Belinda Bromilow], she’s sort of still where she was; she’s caught between Catherine, who’s like a daughter in a way. She’s got maternal feelings for her and she’s also into the idea of a woman running the country, but she also cares a lot about her nephew. So she’s sort of trying to balance herself between those two things… Basically, the court gets completely rearranged.

We find out at the end of The Great Season 1 that Catherine is pregnant. The relationship between Catherine and Peter in season 2 with the aftermath of her failed coup will be interesting. McNamara shares the position that the two are in:
We always said it’s sort of like a ticking bomb, because she feels like she’s safe from Peter while she’s pregnant and she’s safe from another coup attempt because she’s got the heir to the throne inside her, but she’s also becoming a mother for the first time. So she sort of has political aspects to the baby and her own personal feelings to the baby. And the fact her and Peter are parents of a child makes their relationship kind of… quite odd.
The relationship between Peter and Catherine is odd. They are two very different people. He’s an incompetent jackass and she was an ambitious but naïve girl. Although, with all she’s experienced, the girl in her is dead and the determined woman is ready to get shit right this time. The Great Season 2 will stream on Hulu on November 19.
