Expired | Ivan Sen Interview [Exclusive]

Ryan Kwanten in Expired

Director Ivan Sen visited Hong Kong and he immediately saw visions of a near-futuristic sci-fi world with the streets filled with Blade Runner-like neon lights and landscapes. He wrote the sci-fi romance Expired as a tale of two lovers that cannot be romantically linked due to their different worlds.

The film stars Ryan Kwanten, Jillian Nguyen, and Hugo Weaving.

Here is the official synopsis:

Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) and Hugo Weaving (The Matrix franchise) star in this futuristic thriller set in the neon-drenched metropolis. As Jack (Kwanten) works as a hitman, his lonely life is altered by two strangers – one a club singer, the other a scientist (Weaving). Jack and the singer fall in love, but as their relationship grows stronger, Jack grows physically weaker, unable to assassinate the targets he seeks. And it doesn’t take long for the scientist to discover the shocking reasons behind Jack’s deadly affliction.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta chatted with director and writer Ivan Sen. We discussed Hong Kong as the perfect setting for a science fiction movie as a backdrop with the addition of special effects. Also, we talked about the romantic links, events, and characters in the movie. Sen even remarked on how Jillian Nguyen played her part perfectly due to her relations as an immigrant for the story.

Ivan Sen worked on numerous short films through the late 1990s until he made his feature film debut with Beneath Clouds in 2002. The film won a Silver Bear at the 2002 Berlin Film Festival, Best Director at the 2002 Australian Film Institute Awards, and screened at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. Also, he wrote and directed numerous documentaries, including Yellow Fella which was selected at the Cannes Film Festival in 2005. He went on to complete several more films, including Dreamland, Toomelah, Mystery Road, and Goldstone.
