Extra WandaVision Episodes Confirmed – For The Characters Only Though

Showrunner Jac Schaffer confirms extra WandaVision episodes, though, for the characters only I’m afraid. Schaeffer also teases the reason the SWORD name was changed in the show. Read on for more details.

Are SWORD (and Jimmy Woo) seeing more episodes of WandaVision than the audience, i.e. us? Yes, is the answer to this question according to Schaeffer. The WandaVision showrunner recently had a chat with /Film, and they had to ask the question. Surprisingly Schaeffer was pretty free with her answer here, which means this was never intended to be a secret.

“There are additional episodes. They’re seeing additional episodes, yeah.”

Based on what we have heard and what we know, I have a feeling there was at one point supposed to be an ’80’s episode, maybe even ’90’s. I don’t think these periods were ever filmed but there were rumors an ’80’s set up was there in the planning stages. I’m going on a limb and saying I don’t think there is anything interesting that SWORD sees and we do not. I feel like all the important beats at the edge of the sitcom plot we have seen already. As for what comes next, who knows. We know time will advance again within Westview as the series progresses. However, after this week’s latest flashback episode, who truly knows? Well, Jac Schaeffer knows, but she isn’t talking as you’d imagine.

Schaffer did clam up more at the next question. Why was the meaning of SWORD changed from the comics to the show? In the comics SWORD stood for Sentient World Observation and Response Department. However, in the MCU it stands for Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division. A subtle change, but surely an important one. Or else, why change the name in the first place. All Schaeffer would say is,

“That is a decision that has to do with larger story.”

Schaeffer has been well briefed by Marvel on what she can talk about versus what she cannot. Earlier on in this interview Schaeffer was asked whether there could be longer runtimes in future episodes? This is a rumor that has been around for some time and even Kevin Feige added fuel to the fire. Schaeffer simply enjoyed the fact she was also to say she could not answer that question, without having to dance around things.

As for SWORD, well for a start the MCU iteration seems to deal with more terrestrial threats as opposed to only extra-terrestrial. However, with the MCU moving more and more into the cosmos now, perhaps SWORD was far easier to take the place of SHIELD for Marvel terrestrially as well as in space? SHIELD is still a name that sparks fear within the MCU after the events of The Winter Soldier. Maybe it is just simpler to have SWORD be the non-super entity within the MCU going forward? I’m speculating wildly here, so forgive me. Then, I guess some of you fellow fans will be speculating wildly right now as well?

What do you think of the SWORD name change and Schaeffer’s comments on extra WandaVision episodes being available to the characters? As always, leave any thoughts below.
