Falcon And The Winter Soldier’s Best Moment Was Improvised

The Star Spangled Man

Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode one ended not with a whimper, but with a wink.

I am of course talking about the very last moment of the episode, following the reveal of the “new Captain America.” After we see his Shield and his gun, we finally see John Walker’s (Wyatt Russell) face under the mask. And he winks, right into the camera.

On the Empire Podcast, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier director Kari Skogland explained the wink was a decision Russell made on set:

I wanted it to be kind of heroic and monumental, and so it was low angles and we put them in this portico, a very ‘big government’ vibe, so it had all of that weight behind it. And also, you don’t really get to know him, right? You see his back and you see the shield. It’s just the nature of how we did it, and then, of course, there’s the television of it. It’s all about, who is this? What is this? And then – boom – you know, that wink.

That was completely a moment that Wyatt brought to the party. And that was fantastic. All the actors brought lots of moments like that to the story, because once they once they got inside their character, they were able to play. Out of that comes brilliance.

We’ll be seeing a lot more of Wyatt Russell as John Walker in the weeks to come on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Hopefully, we can get another wink or three in before the season is over.
