As a ‘90s kid, I can’t overstate the influence Harry Potter has had on me as a reader and consumer of media. It was a story that not only brought in magic, but made it feel like the kind of magic that could be incorporated in our everyday lives. A real piece of escapism that captured the imagination of millions worldwide. All these years later, Fantastic Beasts has yet to recapture that very essence over the course of its two movies.
While its first entry, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, did admirable, taking in over $800 million worldwide, its successor, Fantastic Beast: The Crimes of Grindelwald performed less than optimally, only taking in around $650 million, showing a real negative trend for the franchise as a whole.

Warner Bros. hopes to change this up with Fantastic Beasts 3, starting with the addition of Harry Potter vet Steve Kloves as a co-screenwriter, along with author J.K. Rowling, who penned the first two scripts solo. According to Variety’s sources, the hope is that his understanding of the world will help them cater more to what fans want to see in these movies.
To that end, it looks like there will also be more of an emphasis on Dumbledore and Hogwarts this time around. It sounds like this strategy could be working, as execs are reportedly high on the quality of the script and see it as a big step up from previous installments, which is good to hear.
But are execs the ones who really know what’s best for the franchise here? I think bringing in Kloves was a stroke of genius, but I hope the execs aren’t too hands-on, as we’ve seen what happens when Warner Bros. gets too handsy.
