Fantastic Four Director Updates On Cast, Filming Dates And Hypes The Story

In a recent interview Joseph Quinn talks playing Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four for the first time since he was cast.

In a recent interview Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman gives updates on the cast, filming dates and also hypes the story being told. Shakman spoke with Collider about the upcoming first MCU based Fantastic Four movie. There were plenty of rumors around casting just before the strikes kicked in. However as you’d imagine nothing since.

Shakman of course cannot give an accurate guess on when that casting announcement will happen. The strikes are still running for SAG-AFTRA at least, even though the WGA strikes have been resolved. However, there will be an announcement sooner or later.

“Hard to say. Like I said, we’re in the middle of a SAG strike, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they get a great deal really soon and we can go back. Then, once that’s resolved, there’ll be a plan at that point, but I can’t say too much. There will be an announcement at some point! I know that the internet is very excited to find out, and I’m excited to share it. I just can’t do it yet.”

Sounds like he has the cast in his mind even if 1-2 actors are not yet signed up. Most of the insiders seem to think Vanessa Kirby is already locked as Sue Storm, but the rest seem up in the air.

As for when Fantastic Four will start to film? There is a plan, says Shakman.

“Yes, we are definitely gonna go in front of cameras next year. Probably the spring.”

Shakman also confirmed the shoot is taking place in Pinewood in London.

Finally, Shakman hypes the script for Fantastic Four and teases what is to come will be different.

“It’s different in so many ways. I wish I could be specific. I wish I could say more. But we are doing things very differently from a story standpoint, from an approach to the filmmaking standpoint, that really fits the material. I wish I could say more. I would love to, but I can’t. But I think it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve seen before, and certainly unlike anything at Marvel that you’ve seen before.”

I feel like we’eve been waiting for too long for this one already. Long time readers will know Fantastic Four was one of my top 5 comic books as a kid. Therefore, I’m so looking forward to someone really going for a new take. I’ve not yet been impressed by any adaptations of this team before, so I feel like there’s a chance here to get it right. The cat we hear Sue will be the lead of the film and not Reed this time is also music to my ears. Sue was a character that got stiffed by the sexist attitudes of the 60’s, but was one of the most improved character in the comic books by the time I was reading them in the 80’s.

However, my favorite FF character will always be Ben and so far he’s been designed so badly. He should just slightly smaller than Hulk and that means full CGI motion capture for me.

What do you think of Matt Shakman’s comments as the Fantastic Four director gives updates on the cast, filming dates and also hypes the story? Thoughts below as always.
