There’s been positive buzz surrounding the new cinematic take on William Shakespeare’s Macbeth that has making the rounds this year. It stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, and is directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown). Aside from the exciting casting of Fassbender and Cotillard in the two iconic lead roles, it’s the gritty aesthetic that Kurzel is going for that has people interested in the project.
Rather than grandiose theatricality, or something very sophisticated and classic, Kurzel is taking a very naturalistic approach to the material. He’s researched that period in Scotland’s history, and has crafted the film in a way that shows what a brutal time it was and what kind of person Macbeth would’ve had to have been to succeed in that climate. So far, mainstream audiences have only seen a brief teaser but there’s now a full-length teaser trailer.
