In a recent interview Lucasfilm chief creative officer Dave Filoni teases Thrawn’s future in the Star Wars MandoVerse. Thrawn, who went missing at the end of Rebels was discovered and brought back to the main Galaxy at the end of Ahsoka. It seems clear that he will be a major threat for the fledgling New Republic going forward. We also know that events in the MandoVerse are culminating towards a movie. That movie will be directed by Dave Filoni and it seems clear Thrawn will be a chief player.
Filoni spoke to Empire recently, and Filoni offers some small teases of what is to come.
“We set up Captain Pellaeon in The Mandalorian, and that’s a character that goes with Thrawn, so I’d love to see the two of them together,” Filoni teases. Plus, he points out, a fellow figure from Ahsoka has a long-standing conflict with the Grand Admiral. “His foil throughout Rebels was Hera,” Filoni states. “Pitting the two generals against one another is something that I find interesting.” We could be in for an almighty clash of blue vs. green.
There was also some thoughts from actor Lars Mikkelsen on what the future holds for his character.
“Straighten out all the others and tidy up the shop,” he says. “I could imagine something in terms of a power play within the Empire.”

The question is, what happens next now Thrawn has returned? The next project coming up set within the MandoVerse is Skeleton Crew. For now we can’t say what connection that show will have to the overarching plot. Perhaps, despite being set in the same era, very little? Until we see Skeleton Crew we cannot say. After that we need to await Mando Season 4 which is due to film early 2024 for a 2025 release.
One would imagine that Mando Season 4 will start to tie in with what has happened since Ahsoka. LRM‘s own Shockey has heard some rumblings that there are other shows in development in this MandoVerse. Shockey still thinks they will do a show focused on Ezra and Hera with Thrawn as the antagonist. He’s also heard that some of the elements of cancelled show Rangers of the New Republic could be adapted in this new series.
I’d also guess we will get an Ahsoka Season 2. However, that story seems for now to be heading in a slightly different direction. Ahsoka and Sabine are stranded in another Galaxy. Yet, as Filoni has said, they are where they need to be. Baylon and Shin still have to be dealt with, and we still don’t fully know Baylon’s goal.
My guess is that the stories of Ahsoka, Mando and a new series, plus maybe Skeleton Crew all come together in the movie. For now though, they are all going in a slightly different direction. I’ll also put it out there that I don’t think Thrawn will be the main bad guy of the movie. Just saying.
