Final Fantasy XVI Takes The Franchise Back To Medieval-Inspired Fantasy!

Final Fantasy returns to its medieval-inspired roots.

Ah, yes. Many of us Final Fantasy fans have seen the franchise evolve over the decades. Like many fantasy video games out there, it started off as a very medieval-inspired franchise. There were knights, metal armor, swords and sorcery, and the like. It kept that sort of style for many games, with its biggest departure likely being Final Fantasy VI, which went for more of a steampunk style. Since then, they’ve largely gone in other directions for their games.

Now, with Final Fantasy XVI, it looks like we are going for more medieval-inspired once again! Of course, staples such of crazy creatures, summons, and Chocobos are present and accounted for, but there is a distinct medieval-ness in this one that was missing. Check it out in the trailer down below!

As you can see, Final Fantasy XVI does seem to be leaning into more traditional-style dark fantasy, and I’m  digging it. It’s an approach I wasn’t expecting, considering just how anime the entire franchise has been since Final Fantasy VII.

There isn’t much to work with in terms of actual gameplay. Yes, we see some gameplay footage, but there isn’t much on-screen U.I. to latch onto. In many ways, it looks like an embellishment on what fans got in Final Fantasy XV. That, in and of itself got refined in Final Fantasy VII Remake, but it’s not clear just how this one will skew. However, given that we likely won’t see this game for another couple of years, there is plenty of time for them to delve into that down the line.
