Here we go. Us normies may have just seen the trailer for the first time for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood just earlier today, but lucky audience members at the Cannes Film Festival got a one-up on us: they got the whole damn movie instead! Given that this is the creation of one of the few auteurs in the business, you know we’re all waiting to see what people have to say.
Early reactions have hit Twitter, and they, for the most part, are very positive, with some out there voicing typical concerns of Tarantino — namely how self-indulgent they are. That being said, if we didn’t get a self-indulgent Tarantino film this late in the game, then why bother going to the movies to see them at all, right?
Here’s what one freelance critic, Jason Gorber, had to say:
“ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD – Historically dubious, thematically brilliant, QT finds his form in film that could win Palme d’Or or be picketed by audiences, or maybe both. Thrilling, provocative, blackly comical, intensely unsettling masterwork.”
#OnceUponATimeInHollywood is a beautiful, brash rumination on the grime and beauty of Hollywood. It is a dirty, sensually realized feat, with many, many shots of dirty, sensualized feet.#QuentinTarantino #Cannes2019

Historically dubious is the most intriguing quote for me there. We know the incident at the cent of this is the Manson family’s murder of Sharon Tate, so perhaps the filmmaker does avoid the actual murder…maybe.
Screen Daily critic, Tim Grierson, wasn’t as ecstatic, saying:
[HIS TWEET HAS SINCE BEEN DELETED]“ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD: Like a lot of recent Tarantino, this is baggy, self-indulgent, fascinatingly its own thing and ambitiously conceived. Of course it’s accomplished, sometimes dazzlingly so, but it ends up being as hit-or-miss as his last few.”
However, Deadline‘s Joe Utichi was also fairly positive on the movie, saying:
“Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood is so gloriously, wickedly indulgent, compelling and hilarious. The film QT was born to make. The world is a more colourful place in Quentin Tarantino’s twilight zone. Round two, please.”

FirstShowing.net‘s Alex Billington, no the other hand, wasn’t so confident…
To be completely honest I'm not yet sure what to make of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Need to let this one marinate, don't have an instant reaction. Most of the film is pretty good, I'm having fun watching them play around in late 60s Hollywood. Then the finale is HOLY FUCK.

And here is a batch of other reactions.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD is wonderful. it’s like tarantino is just dreamily reminiscing for our benefit. feels innocent somehow—lovely, pure, hilarious. witnessing robbie, dicaprio, & pitt pristinely embody 60s LA is enough to make it great. and👏🏼that👏🏼payoff👏🏼 #Cannes2019

#OnceUponATimeInHollywood is a mesmerizing mix of Jackie Brown- and Inglourious Basterds-Tarantino. QT is at his least flashiest and most emotional, yet at the same time having a ball toying around with Hollywood cinema, locations and history. #vertigocannes #cannes2019

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD: Tarantino wasn't joking when he said this was the closest to PULP FICTION that he has come. He juggles a mosaic of characters and story-lines in this one, eventually stringing them together for a relentlessly playful and touching finale. #Cannes2019

So, my conclusion? If you love Tarantino and know what you’re in for, it seems like a welcome movie. And you know what? I’ll go ahead and take that. If you’re Tarantino, it’s nice to know you can still deliver on the promise of your own name.
