Deadline reports that an hour-long Flight of the Conchords comedy special is now officially set for a May release on HBO.
Not a “reunion” special continuing the story-line from the HBO series Flight of the Conchords, instead this special will be taped before a live-studio audience with Bret Mckenzie and Jermaine Clement performing classic and new original songs straight from their Flight of the Conchords Sing Flight of the Conchords Tour.
The original series, Flight of the Conchords, debuted in 2007 and ran for only two seasons, following fictionalized versions of Bret and Jermaine’s lives as struggling musicians from New Zealand trying to make it in New York City. The show earned ten Emmy nominations and their album The Distant Future won Best Comedy Album at the 2008 Grammy Awards.
Jermaine Clement has had quite the big screen career since Flight of the Conchords went off the air, appearing in everything from smaller films like Taika Waititi’s What We Do In The Shadows to blockbusters including Moana, The BFG, and playing the main villain in Men In Black 3.
Bret Mckenzie, on the other hand, has been doing more music than acting, writing music for The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted, as well as The Simpsons. He did also reprise his Elf cameo from The Lord of the Rings in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey just few years ago.
