Long-distance relationships may jeopardize any marriage. A robot replacement proves to be even more decisive.

Based on Iain Reid’s philosophical novel, Foe stars Saoirse Ronan, Paul Mescal, and Aaron Pierre in this well-acted drama about relationships. Garth Davis directed the film with the screenplay written by Reid and Davis.

Here is the official synopsis:

Academy Award nominees Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal star in Foe, a haunting exploration of marriage and identity set in an uncertain world. Hen and Junior farm a secluded piece of land that has been in Junior’s family for generations, but their quiet life is thrown into turmoil when an uninvited stranger (Aaron Pierre) shows up at their door with a startling proposal. The film is based on mesmerizing imagery and persistent questions about the nature of humanity (and artificial humanity) bring the not-too-distant future to luminous life.

As the trailer indicates, powerful performances from Ronan and Mescal may raise specific conversations for the upcoming awards season.

Also, Scout Press in the United States and Simon & Schuster Canada announced a new edition of the novel with the Amazon Studios film cover on October 3.

Foe is in theaters on October 6.
