NatGeo’s Explorer: Lost in the Arctic | Renan Ozturk on Retracing the Steps of a Doomed Explorer

Explorer: Lost in the Arctic

The Northwest Passage was a seafarer theory that could easily connect the West with the East around the globe through the icy ocean of the arctic. Almost two centuries ago, many explorers navigated those waters hoping to be the first, and one explorer—Sir John Franklin, met his horrible fate.

National Geographic explorer Mark Synnott decided to retrace Sir John Franklin’s steps through the Arctic Ocean in seeking his missing tomb and solve the mysteries of the captain and crew. With a small boat and crew, he traveled with National Geographic filmmaker Renan Ozturk as they quickly learned about the mishaps and dangers of those waters and islands.

Here is the official description of Explorer: Lost in the Arctic:

Sir John Franklin set off from England in 1845 with two ships and 129 men to be the first to navigate the Northwest Passage, a new trade route over the top of the world, when Franklin’s ships vanished without a trace. Now, a team of explorers attempts to solve the mystery by retracing Franklin’s route in search of his long-lost tomb.
