Fox Executives Believe The Simpsons Will Be Around For A While

The Simpsons, the long-running Fox show that paved the way for other adult oriented animated series such as South Park and Family Guy, will move into its 30th season this fall encompassing over 600 episodes. How much longer will The Simpsons be on the air? According to Fox Executives, for the foreseeable future. Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour, Fox executive Dana Walden said the following.

The Simpsons is so much a part of the brand, there’s been such an incredible halo effect of that show and the other animated series that are on our Sunday night. There are no plans for them to go anywhere other than Fox. Down the line, what kind of decision is made, I can’t really speak to, but for the foreseeable future, there’s so much upside and benefit to having a great, Emmy Award-winning, smart, provocative, quality show. There’s no consideration of not ordering more Simpsons.”

Fellow Fox exectuive Gary Newman on The Simpsons after the upcoming Disney/Fox merger.

“As long as we’ve all been in business, networks have licensed shows they don’t have ownership of. It is challenging, and I anticipate it will be challenging on The Simpsons. But as Dana said, The Simpsons is so associated with Fox, and that association benefits both the network and the owner of the IP. … I feel confident Disney and Fox are going to find a way to both have an interest in that show.”

Though many fans believe the show to be long beyond its prime, The Simpsons are the ones who initially kicked open the door for the type of humor we are used to enjoying from the animated shows of today. Without The Simpsons, Married With Children, and Cops, the Fox network may not have survived.
