Freeform Opts Not To Renew Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger For A Third Season

Some disappointing news today as Deadline is reporting that Freeform has decided not to renew Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger for a third season. The series starred Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph as Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, two very different teenagers from opposite backgrounds that one day wake up with mysterious powers that are somehow linked to one another. The first season was very well received by viewers when it first debuted in 2018, which quickly got it renewed for a second season.

Unfortunately the second season where we find our two heroes trying to figure out their place in the world, saw it’s rating drop almost -40%. This was on the same level as another series from Freeform that was also recently canceled by Freeform, PLL: The Perfectionists. With no word of a renewal five months after the end of the second season, it’s not that big of a surprise that the series was not picked up for a third season. Although it could have just been given a pause while series were shuffled around from Hulu and the upcoming Disney+, but the word is that the options on the cast expired this week.

Freeform put out a statement about the cancellation of Cloak and Dagger saying, “we are so proud of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and the trailblazing stories this series told. We are also grateful to our incredible talent Oliva Holt and Aubrey Joseph for bringing these beloved characters to life, and showrunner Joe Pokaski for his vision. We’d like to thank our partners at Marvel Television for a wonderful two seasons and are we are hopeful that we can find another project together.”

The cancellation of this series comes at the same time that Marvel Television is going through a leadership change along with a possible restructuring. After 10 years at the helm of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb is leaving and Kevin Feige is taking over as chief creative officer of all things Marvel which now include television and comics. We will have one more chance to see the duo in an episode of The Runaways on Hulu, which I thought would be cancelled before Cloak and Dagger.
