FX Gives Us An Inside Look At The Women Of Mayans M.C.

Most of times films and television shows that we watch involving organized crime portrays very strong male characters with supporting female characters that are never on their same level. Many times we see them just enjoying the lavish lifestyle that is provided by the male until it all falls apart in the end. Lucky for us that pattern in the last few years has been broken by strong lead and supporting women in films and series. One perfect example of this is Gemma Teller Morrow, played by Katey Sagal from Sons of Anarchy for seven seasons. Now in the spin-off series Mayans M.C. that continues with two very strong female characters that are not allowing themselves to be second fiddle to no one. FX has released a short clip that focuses on the women of season two of Mayans M.C. that you can check out above.

The clip focuses Sarah Bolger who plays Emily and Carla Baratta who plays Adelita. Both characters have been featured on the series since the first episode of season one of the series. In the beginning of the clip co-creator, executive producer, writer and director for Mayans M.C. Elgin James talked about the importance of not just making their female characters strong because they are given male characteristics, which is why they have a writers room that is mainly comprised of women. This way they would be able to develop their characters differently than just a male role played by a women. This is exactly what they have done with Bolger and Baratta’s characters.

Adelita’s character is the leader of Los Olvidados and an activist that is always very active in the Mexican communities. It was very interesting to see how Baratta describes her character in the clip. “Even though she lives in a masculine world, she is really motherly and feminine. That is why men do whatever she wants them to do because she knows how to talk to them”, said Baratta. Adelita is always surrounded by bikers and members of the cartel who’s job is to be tough guys, but despite this she never seems out of place. She uses what I can only describe as a mothers touch to get through to people. In my personal opinion this includes both adults and children which makes her a very interesting character. She doesn’t need to be the toughest person in the room but she is always one of the smartest. We saw this a few weeks back in episode five of Mayans M.C. titled Xquic, where she has to convince Angel Reyes, played by Clayton Cardenas, to allow her to continue to stay in custody.

Emily’s character started off the first season as the next door and childhood sweetheart of EZ Reyes, played by JD Pardo, but while he was in jail fell in love and married Miguel Galindo, played by Danny Pino, who is the head of the Galindo Cartel. I must admit that at first I was not a fan of her backstory as I thought it would fall right into a stereotypical role where she is caught between her husband and her supposed soulmate. But this season she has without a doubt taken a huge step forward as she is not going to wait for anyone to help her reach her ambitious goals. Bolger said that, “a lot of female characters are sidelined a little bit for their own protection they are not brought in on the nefarious acts. But Emily doesn’t want to be saved. I’m seeing her watch Miguel and the chess he plays and then learning how to wipe the board.”

Both of these women have had significant growth this season and I look forward to continue to see that as the second season of Mayan M.C. is released weekly. If you think about it, these two characters have the potential to take down a cartel and a motorcycle club, which would make for very interesting television.
