Game Developers Need To Stop Putting Release Dates Out So Early

“Another game, another Game Developers delay” This is a phrase that is often too common in the video game community. Whether it is Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy Remakes, Gravity Rush 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Mass Effect AndromedaThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or any other massive popular titles that have missed deadlines, gamers are getting used to the idea of not getting a product on time.  The video game industry is the only industry that is allowed to advertise a product release date and receive absolutely no penalty whatsoever. Developers expect consumers to plunk down money  for pre-orders and then just sit back and wait for their product to be finished with no repercussion.  The latest example of this practice is of course Cyberpunk 2077, the game has already reached gold status but has had multiple delays with another one announced a couple days ago.

Lead developers Adam Badowski and Marcin Iwinkski had this to share the other day about the latest delay in Cyberpunk 2077:

While the letter is understandable on the reasoning behind the delay, it doesn’t change the fact that consumers must continue to wait for a product they were initially promised months ago.  This is not the only example of video games being delayed multiple time from their initial launch date. Let’s face it unless something changes, Game Developers will continue this practice of baiting customers to preorder games with no penalty if they miss a release date.

Of course there is the counter argument that when developers rush a product to meet a deadline then it turns out to be horrible. The system has to change one way or another. Either put a penalty in place for Game Developers for not missing a deadline or have them wait until the product is actually finished to promote a release date.  Lets just hope that we get to play Cyberpunk 2077 before the year 2077.
