Game Of Thrones Actor John Bradley Talks About His Characters Big Moments In The Latest Episode [SPOLIERS]

WARNING SEASON 8 EPISODE 1 GAME OF THRONES SPOILERS AHEAD.

This past weekend was the beginning of the end for our favorite Game of Thrones characters. This is a storyline that many of us have been following since 2011 when we first found out that “winter was coming”. Now with winter upon us and an army of white walkers on their way to destroy everything in their path, the fight for the Iron Throne may have to be put to rest until they can survive the proverbial storm upon them.

During the first episode which payed homage to the first episode of the series, one character in particular had it really rough, Samwell Tarly who is played by John Bradley. Here he finds out from Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke, that his father and brother both refused to bend the knee and ended up burned to death. Then later in the same episode he has to tell his best friend Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington that he is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.

During an interview with Variety Bradley told them how he prepared for such an emotional moment for his character. After finding out the fate of his family, he still heads down into the Winterfell crypts to to meet up with his old friends and deliver him the truth about his parentage. He revealed that in order to prepare for this scene he had to break it down in two parts. The first was the reunion of two old friends and telling Jon about his father and brother, something that Bradley said his character “just understandably needs to get that off his chest.”

The second part was the revelation that all of us Game of Thrones fans have been waiting for since it was first revealed to us that Jon was in fact not a bastard at all, but a Targaryen. Something that Bradley calls, “the most important piece of information in the entire show.”

What is amazing from this scene is to see how Sam recognizes the value of the information that he is about to tell Jon. Despite whatever emotions he may be feeling at the moment, he delivers the news as calmly as possible, knowing exactly how Jon would probably react.

“From a performance point of view it was very delicate, because I know I had to get all of the emotions into the first half of the scene, and in the second half abandon them,” Bradley says. “Sam has to calm himself down and explain the situation to Jon very calmly and in terms which are easy to understand. He knows Jon is going to be angry, he knows any blasphemy against the sainted figure of Ned Stark is going to rile Jon up. Sam needs to be as calm as possible to throw a cold blanket on that, to make Jon listen to what he has got to say.”

It will be interesting to see Sam’s character going forward as well as his relationship with Jon as we can imagine that things are about to get really complicated. The good news is that we only have to wait until next Sunday.
